From our Chinese Monochrome Collection, a beautiful white porcelain Guanyin, Goddess of Compassion and Mercy, executed in the style of early 20th century slip-cast blanc de chine from Dehua, but actually a later vintage-era white porcelain example from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi Province. (Among other things, the difference here rests in the nature of the underlying porcelain paste, which to novice eyes may be difficult to discern, but to our eyes is clearly not true blanc de chine.) Nevertheless, still a beautiful example with legitimate artistic merit in its own right, depicting Guanyin with a wonderfully serene expression, and adorned with elaborate body jewelry, a ruyi sceptre in her left hand, a fish basket in her right hand, and standing atop a swirling wave base. All of these particular details would have been meticulously hand-crafted, even including the bead-by-bead application of her body jewelry. It is really only the body core per se that gets slip-cast, as even Guanyin's head and arms with her very delicate hands and fingers would have been finished separately by the craftsman.
