From our European Collection, a very fine and elegant Vernis Martin style corner display cabinet, late 19th/early 20th century, probably French. This piece features a three-quarter gallery with a red velvet lined interior (original interior), and inset on the top with a lovely piece of reddish brown marble (also original), nicely veined with whitish / cream colored striations. There is a top frieze applied with fine metalwork consisting of gilt-bronze / dore bronze tassels and foliate scrolls, surmounted above a central bowfront door painted with an adoring couple in a landscape. This central painting is flanked with similar landscape paintings on each side. The cabinet rests upon raised cabriole legs, which are also adorned with the same gilt bronze / dore bronze metalwork as on the top frieze. The photos here were taken before we re-installed the glass shelves, but we do have those shelves in our possession, and they appear to be original as well. Overall a modest sized but very nicely executed Vernis Martin piece.

Size and Condition: Approximately 58 inches high, 25.5in wide, 26.5in deep. Excellent condition, no real notable flaws warrant mentioning. There is the typical crazing / craquelure one expects to see of any 19th century painted surface, as in the case of the landscape with the adoring couple here, but this is typical and expected, and also a sign of true age and authenticity. Perhaps some minor dings elsewhere we'll just mention for completeness, but nothing in particular of note we actually have in mind to point to. A fine piece.
