From our Indian Subcontinent Collection, a fine and intricately constructed silver filigree peacock adorned with turquoise stones in the tail feathers. Though modest in size, its stature should not belie the amount of work needed to create this wonderful little object, as filigree work is very intricate and time consuming. Sourced directly from Jaipur, the so-called "Pink City" and one of several marvelous cities in Rajasthan India with a rich culture of handicrafts production.
The peacock has an important and long established place within Hindu mythology, and is recognized as the vehicle for Murugan, Ganesh's brother. Additionally, Krishna is most often always depicted with a peacock feather in his headband. But besides any connections to religious mythologies, the peacock is admired on a secular basis in India just as it is in the West, for the splendor and unparalleled beauty of its tail feathers. This piece is approximately 20 years old and has a good oxidized patina. We are not positive exactly of the silver content percentage, but it appears to be high grade. Size and condition: 4 1/2 inches tall, 5 inches wide, 2 1/2 inches deep. |
