Suzuki Seisei Orchid Vase (Seto Japan)
Suzuki Seisei (1914-1990) was the first Seto artist to extensively experiment with non-traditional glazes, gaining the nickname “color magician”. Seisei won an award at Nitten in 1954, becoming a judge there, and in many other exhibitions. He had been one of the most popular and influential potters in Seto, and he worked very hard on promoting all Seto ceramics. Over the years, he produced a myriad of different designs and styles. This piece, covered in brownish iron oxide rich glaze with orchid shaped blue translucent glaze was typical of his style from the late 1960s till his passing. This one dates to 1970. Vase is 9” (23cm) tall, and 3” (7.3 cm) in diameter. It is enclosed in original signed box, with potter sealed cloth and artist’s biography (in Japanese). His work is in all major museums and private collections in Japan. For more information, see Finest Ceramics in Seto, Seto City Museum, 2005.
