RARE kogo by Zen priest Murakami Jikai Golden Pavilion
Murakami Jikai (1901-1985) was a long-term abbot of the large temple complex Rokuon-ji (Temple of the Deer Garden), most commonly referred to as the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Jikai was the abbot of the complex when a mentally ill acolyte burnt the temple to the ground on July 2, 1950. Jikai spearheaded the rebuilding process which was completed in the autumn of 1955. The events of this tragedy were recounted by Yukio Mishima in his acclaimed tale, Kinkaku-ji (The Temple of Golden Pavilion), published in 1956. The lid of this stoneware incense container (kogo), inscribed Rokuon (鹿苑), is a tribute to the famous temple complex. The container was made by Mashimizu Zoroku IV (b. 1933), sealed Zoroku on the bottom. Zoroku is an artist that hails from a family of potters in Kyoto that specialize in tea ceremony utensils. Sadly, Jikai died before the final firing of this piece. The lid of the box is inscribed by Kajitani Sōnin (1914-1995), head of Shōkoku-ji, the temple that oversees Rokuon-ji. Kogo dates from 1985, and is in perfect condition, in potter and Kajitani signed box. Photocopy of explanation in Japanese is included. Height 1” (3 cm), diameter 2 7/16” (6.5 cm).
