"Geraniums", a beautifully drawn chromolithograph from Louisa Anne Twamley's "The Romance of Nature" of 1836.
Louisa Anne Twamley was born in Birmingham, England in 1812. She was an artist, writer and poet. Her first book, "Poems" (1835), was followed in 1836 by "The Romance of Nature", from which this print comes. As its title suggests, "The Romance of Nature" was not strictly a botanical book, but rather was a poetic evocation of the author's love of flowers. It was mostly written in verse, both by Louisa Anne and others. The hand-coloured lithographed plates were made after the author’s own drawings. Of these she wrote in the preface:
"I have never been guilty of curving a stem on my paper, which I found growing straight in the field, or of magnifying a flower for the sake of gay effect. My models always appear to me too perfect in their beauty for me to dream of doing aught but attempt to copy, faithfully as I can, their various forms and colours..."
In 1839 she married Charles Meredith, and the couple emigrated to Australia that year. She spent the rest of her life in Australia and Tasmania.
The condition of this print is good with some age-toning.
This is a genuine antique print. It is not a reproduction. Please note that the digital watermark on the photographs here is NOT on the original print.
