This antique Canton watercolor on pith paper (China, 1825-1875) belongs to an ancient album or set of 12 costume figure paintings showing mandarins and ladies of the Chinese ruling class. Such an album might have been a souvenir, which Western merchants brought back home as a piece of Chinese life after traveling. Mandarins and ladies in colorful costumes fascinated the 19th century Western viewer.
This sheet shows a beautiful standing young women in a green robe with fine embroidery. She also wears a headgear with pending pearls.
