Calligraphy by Moe Haruka – “Mai”
This wonderful calligraphy was made by a contemporary Japanese calligrapher named Moe Haruka. It is entitled “Mai” (dance). It might not be difficult to see the dancer gracefully stroked, floating on the washi (Japanese paper). And it is easy to realize then that Japanese ideograms have a spirit of their own that can enchant and steal the viewer into fantasy.

Moe Haruka uses the “lines of Kanji (Chinese characters) to represent the nature of Japan, its expressions and its culture. She wants the viewer to “smell Japan, without having to leave his or her country.”

Moe Haruka was born in Kamakura, an ancient capital of Japan and a historic Buddhist center for Japan. She is a recognized artist and designer who started writing calligraphy at the age of 5. She has been the recipient of awards from the Japan Calligraphers Association in 1996 and 1997 and has exposed her work in Tokyo and Paris. She was also commissioned to design labels for Belgian chocolatier “Galler” and Italian ice cream confectioner ”Luna di Rome”. In 2007 she worked with French chef Alain Ducasse on the design of menus and again in 2009 on a set design for a Kabuki dinner featuring actor Ichikawa Ebizo XI.
