| This red raku-yaki chawan is a true gem. Probably dating from the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912), it is a splendid example of the beauty of this style of bowls, made exclusively for the tea ceremony. The Raku family has held very high standard for the making of tea ceremony wares since the 16th century. Until the modern age, their wares were reserved for the aristocratic class, but with the Meiji Restoration, Kyoto potters started to emulate their bowls and make them available to a broader segment of a little more “democratized” society. This particular bowl resembles the work of the 10th Raku Kichizaemon (1795-1854); its small size, the masterful trimming work as well as the skillful use of the overglaze make it a remarkable piece. The bowl is signed with a generic raku mark. There are a few minute dents on the lip of the bowl and a tiny piece of the delicate kodai (foot) is missing. The chawan is otherwise in great condition. It will be shipped in an unmarked kiri wood box. Dimensions: 11.5 cm x 8 cm (4.6 in x 3.2 in); Weight 250g (8.8 oz) More pictures available on demand. | ||||||||||||
