| Oni Hagi is one of the most remarkable types of Japanese ware. The genre is a creation of a legendary potter named Miwa Jusetsu, born in 1910 (the eleventh Miwa Kyusetsu), who inherited the glazing techniques from his brother Miwa Kyuwa (1895-1981) (the tenth Miwa Kyusetsu); both have been designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties (National Living Treasures) of Japan. Those techniques have now been transmitted to other Hagi potters. This particular guinomi (sake cup) was made by Miwa Masatsugu, born in 1971, a grandson of Miwa Jusetsu, born from his second son, Miwa Eizo. The cup presents the fine, sensual qualities of that ceramic, with the bare clay, at the foot, creating a wonderful play of feels and tones. The Miwa name is a reference in Hagi, as the first potter of the famous lineage established one of the first kilns near the small city in 1663. The family's fortune has been linked to the appeal of Hagi pottery and judging by the rekindled interest in that tradition, the family tree might bear many more master craftsmen.
