| Kawai Kanjiro (1890-1966), a master of glaze and fantasy, was part of the Mingei movement of potters, along with his close friend Hamada Shoji, Bernard Leach and Tomimoto Kenkichi. The movement was created as a reaction to the industrialization of ceramic production, to give back spirit to pottery and nobility to daily ware. The poetic character of Kawai Kanjiro's works has influenced potters who studied with him and continues to do so. This particular cup is made in the Kure style, Kure being the ancient name of China, in Japanese. It was made by the master craftsman's grandson, Kawai Toshitaka, born in 1946, also a recognized potter who now runs the Kawai kiln. The sculptural character of the vessel and the calligraphy on the box are inspired by his grandfather’s art whose spirit remains alive and as strong as ever. The cup is signed, in perfect condition and will be shipped in a signed wooden box. There are two minor underglaze fire cracks visible, which actually play well with the relief. Dimensions: 5.5 cm x 5.5 cm (4.2 in x 4.2 in); weight 110 g (3.3 oz) More pictures available on demand.
