White Shino Nabe by Takauchi Shugo

This intriguing piece, which may seem unreal and familiar at the same time, is a “nabe”, a large pot used in Japan to boil and cook vegetables, meats and fish. In general, it is placed in the middle of the table and everyone in turn picks up food from the pot as it is cooked. This particular nabe was made by a well known potter named Takauchi Shugo. The artistic spirit that has taken possession of this household item can be sensed in the elegant, white forms of the pot which seems to be floating in the air, as if it were filled with some kind of divine dish. The small holes in the glaze of the lid (su-ana: nest holes) are typical of Shino pottery and add to the uniqueness of this piece; we are several times removed from mass-produced wares. Takauchi Shugo, born in 1938, is a worldwide acclaimed Mashiko based potter. He founded his kiln in 1968 after having discovered Mashiko ware and left his life as a white collar. The nabe is signed and in perfect condition. There is a small crack, that occurred in the kiln during firing, by one of the handles (see picture 10); more than a flaw, it is an admirable part of the authentic character of this pot.
