| This fantastic chawan (tea bowl) looks like it is being engulfed by the sea. The dripping water gradually envelops the bowl whose kodai (foot) serenely awaits its fate as the ocean surges; a spectacular metaphor for this land ravaged many times by nature’s forces, yet always rising anew. This vessel was made by a potter named Wakao Kei, born in 1910. Wakao Kei began working with tiles before entering the world of pottery. He established a kiln called Torakei-gama (kiln of the tiger valley), in the pottery center of Tajimi, in Gifu prefecture. His son Masahiro and his grandson Keisuke continue to produce Mino wares there. The lid of the box bears the date March 21, 1970, which is probably the bowl’s birth date or the date of its acquisition by its first owner. The chawan is signed and in perfect condition. It will be shipped in a signed box. Dimensions: 12 x 8 cm (4.8 x 3.2 in); weight 390g (13.7 oz) More pictures available on demand Please make sure you read my Sales Policy Page and kindly inquire if you have any question.
