A large and very impressive bronze group of lions cast in naturalistic style as is common for Japanese export bronzes from this period. Marked with a seal: Genryusai Seiya zo: made by Genryusai Seiya. Meiji, late 19th cent. ca. 1890. L 65 cm, H 34 cm. ( 25.6 x 13.4 inches) Condition: Excellent (minor wear due to age). A charming and attractive figure group of dark-patinated bronze depicting the two Zen Buddhist recluses Kanzan and Jittoku (Chinese: Hanshan and Shide). The latter is holding a broom, while the former holds a scroll in accordance with the established tradition of depicting this theme. Mingei-style. Japan, Edo, ca. 1800. H 18, 5cm. Condition: Excellent.

A rare and highly attractive scholarís model of the mountain Kozuyama in stoneware. Shiny black glaze w. spots of brownish iron. Incised name in the bottom: Hakuseki yasohachi shi. Original box w. collectorís labels. Japan, Edo, 19th cent. H 9.5 cm, L 22 cm, W 16.5 cm. Condition: One chip to side (see photo), otherwise fine.
