| A highly unusual scholar’s rock in the form of a miniature landscape w. recesses and deep grooves. Blackish type of stone (limestone?). Placed on a large, base of natural burl or root wood in the form of a turtle. It is possible that the ensemble was meant to depict Penglai, the island of the immortals resting on the back of a giant turtle. China, 19th cent or older. H 14.5 cm (without base)/H 25 cm (w. base), W 20 cm (without base)/W 32.5 cm (w. base). Condition: Perfect. Smooth and good surface. No breaks or chips. Base with some old worming (not active). | ||||||||||||
