A pair of cup stands made of the most exquisite lacquer work in various techniques of gold makie-e on black ground. The decoration depicts various flowers and plants including bamboo, chrysanthemum, plum and orchid. Butterflies decorate the outer, bottom rim of the stands. In fitted, inscribed and signed kiri tomobako (storage box) giving the artist’s name: Yokodo Mikami (1878–1939), a well-established lacquer artist based in Kyoto. Discussed in: Japan, 1900-1923: The New Age of Crafts and Design. From early Taisho period, ca. 1912–1920. H 3.7 cm, D 14.7 cm. Condition: Excellent.
