BONPO master NAMYE´ SHERAB GYALTSEN

Votive image in blackish-purple sandal-wood (zitan) of the important Bon lama Namye (the Peerless) Sherab Gyaltsen (1356–1416), great scholar and organizer of the monastic life of the Bonpo; he is the founder of the monastery of Menri located between Lhasa and Shigatze in Central Tibet in 1405. He is here depicted w. the special Bön crown and from his two hands emanate a pair of lotuses on which are a sword and a holy book respectively. At his back is an open-work mandorla in Nepalese style. 18th cent. Sealed H 12.2 cm. Condition: Excellent.
