| A finely, detailed bronze image of the bodhisattva Manjusri (Wenshu pusa) covered in gilt lacquer. The bodhisattva has a serene facial expression and a large five-pronged crown. He holds a ruiyi scepter in the right hand. Although the image clearly reflects the classical iconography of Chinese Buddhism, the lotus-base has been made in Sino-Tibetan style characteristic of the 15th century. The image is heavy-cast with a rectangular area on the back of the seat meant for a donor inscription. China, mid-Ming, ca. 1500. H 20.4 cm. CONDITION: Extensive rubbing to gilding due to age, but beautiful patina. | ||||||||||||||
