A wonderful pair of SHIBAYAMA presentation ivory vases.
A wonderful and very impressive set of Shibayama presentation vases made of ivory trunks with lightly, curving form. In combination the figures which adorn the sides illustrate the famous story of the “Three Laughing Men at Tiger Brook,” a Buddhist tale from 5th century China, involving the monk Huiyuan and his Konfucian and Daoist companions. The figures are set in a stylized landscape with prunus, pine trees and flowers. Inlays in hard wood, agate, mother of pearl, coral, antler, turtle shell, jade etc. Lacquer parts in taka- and hiramaki-e. Inlaid plaques w. Shibayama and Yasuyuki marks in red (tsuishu seals). Fitted stands in dark hardwood. Japan, Meiji, late 19th cent. H 24.5 cm. CONDITION: Excellent. Very few, minor losses to inlays (see last photo). Additional photos can be provided on request.
