AMERICAN OIL ON CANVAS CARL KAHLER(Benizet)19th Century
CARL KAHLER, oil painting on canvas, late 19th century, woman with gray thorobred race horse. Kahler was a well known listed American artist (Benizet), famous for his beautifully rendered horse and cat paintings. The female figure was a popular model at the time of the painting, and was known as the "IVORY SOAP GIRL." She also modeled for advertising for Coca Cola. Perhaps you have seen her on old trays. Born in Linz, Austria in 1855. Kahler studied at the Munich Art Academy and in Paris. During the 1880s he was well known in Germany and Austria. An itinerant artist, in 1886 he sailed for Australia where his works were well received and in demand. While there, he was awarded the commission for four paintings of the Melbourne Cup (racing event) and others in New Zealand. Upon moving to San Francisco from NYC in 1891, he opened a studio where he specialized in figure painting. Condition: excellent, original gilt Art Nouveau period frame. Measurements: 4 ft height x 3 ft width
