This is a large and very fine Chinese Longquan celadon peony plate. The ceramist Mr. Xiahou Wen (1935 – present) is the most senior artist who specializes in Longquan celadon over 40 years. For years the Chinese believe that peony represents fortune and elegant. The peony pattern on celadon artwork is appreciated by collectors due to the presentation skill that makes it looks alive. The peony on this plate is lively presented under the mono glaze, which is the most difficult era without color tone compensation.
Outside the plate there are lotus-petal designs near the foot rim. The plate is in excellent condition. With Xiahou Wen's chop on the base, the Plum-Green Celadon Peony Plate comes with certificate and original packaging box.

Since last century when the Chinese government began awarding the title of China Art & Craft Master (similar to the Japanese Living National Treasure) to craftsmen, 3 ceramists who specialized in Longquan celadon have been honored thus far (through 2007). In January 2007, Mr. Xiahou Wen was added to this extremely distinguished list. Xiahou is the second celadon ceramists (together with Mr. Mao Zhengcong) to reach this summit.
Xiahou Wen was born in 1935 at Fengyi City of Jiangxi Province. He started the potter career since his graduation from the Art Department of Jindezhen Ceramic College in 1963. Under the assignment from the authority Xiahou Wen moved to Longquan and started his career in local State-owned celadon factory. In 1995 Xiahou Wen earned the honor of ‘First Class Artist of Chinese Folk Art and Craft’ from United Nation’s Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO). He is the only celadon ceramist who earns the title up to present.
Xiahou Wen's celadon artworks not only exhibit a natural, decent and classic sense of style, his many experiences in traditional style reproduction plus carving and incising techniques also brought him various awards from international societies. His stunning artworks also collected and exhibited by China History Museum, Zhi Guang Ge in Zhong Nan Hai(Chinese Presidential Office) in Beijing and Celadon Museum of Longquan City.
As today Xiahou Wen is still the most senior ceramist at Longquan who keeps propelling the art of celadon into new heights.
