A good early example of an Arita grass hopper pattern “Kraak” dish following a Chinese precedent of the late Ming period, Rinaldi Border VII. The dish is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration, as is usual there are glazed over chips from the “biscuit” firing, three spur marks to the reverse. It measures 20.8cm in diameter, and stands 3.4cm to the rim. See no 397 at page 156 of Volume II of the Shibatta Collection, there dated c.1660-90 for a near identical dish as regards form and patterns to the front and reverse. Kraak pattern dishes with similar simplified scrolling arabesques with gobenka flowers have been excavated from the Shimoshirakawa kiln at Arita see no 288 at page 132 “The Voyage of Old Imari Porcelain”.
