An interesting and rare Chinese teapot of conventional bullet form with flanged lid with foo dog finial decorated in a combination of opaque famille rose enamels and translucent famille verte enamels probably dating from the earliest period in the development of the “famille rose palette circa 1720-1725. The subject is that of Li Bai, the famous Tang poet and imbiber of fine wines. Here pictured in one of his famous escapades dressed as a scholar riding a donkey accompanied by a page. In which he contrives to be arrested by a corrupt official by being drunk in charge of a donkey whilst riding backwards. Unbeknown to the official he is carrying the Emperor’s seal and is under his protection. Upon this discovery, the official is humbled, turns over a new leaf, and there is a three day feast with much eating and drinking. The rumour of the Emperor’s scholar is spread abroad and officials far and wide abandon their corrupt ways. The literary source for the story is Feng Menglong’s “ Jingshi Tongyan”. The same subject appears on blue and white tea wares part of the Ca Mau wreck, where the cataloguer entitles it “Search for Plum Blossom”. The remainder of the teapot is decorated with a classic foliage and flowers, peonies, lotuses etc arabesque framed by narrow diaper bands inset with demi florets. The cover surmounted by an enamelled Buddhist Lion knop, an unusual feature more typical of the Kangxi period. The teapot is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. There is an area of glaze loss to the handle that occurred during the firing process. The teapot measures approximately 16cm in length from the tip of the spout to the end of the handle, the body is approximately 9.5cm in diameter at its widest and stands high 12.5cm including the finial, 8.5cm high excluding the cover.
