Exceptional Ko Imari Charger circa 1800
A large moulded charger decorated with a central motif of intertwined sinuous sometsuke unryu, rain dragons in under-glaze cobalt blue outlined in gilt, framed by a band of butterflies and peonies, early summer, and beetles and chrysanthemums, autumnal motifs, boldly enamelled in a palette of bright gosu blue enamel, yellows, greens, iron red and rich gilding. The border decorated with araumi nami, energetic crested waves, tossing cherry blossom, a classic Japanese motif, a metaphor for the transience of life, set against a tako kyuban ground. The dish dates to the early nineteenth century, the early part of the Bunka- Bunsei period, probably to the first decade of the 19th century. Such designs capture the flamboyant Zietgiest of the age following the relaxation of sumptuary laws by the 11th Shogun Ienari. The charger measures 31.5cms in length and is 29cms in width.
