Rare Chinese Yixing Teapot Ewer Kangxi c.1700
A fine Chinese stoneware hexagonal form wine or teapot, which follows the form of a metal precedent, and dates to late seventeenth or early eighteen century, the Kangxi period 1662-1722. The body is crisply moulded with panels of decoration containing set precious objects against an elaborate diaper ground based on lacquer and metal precedents of the late Ming and early Qing period. This style of decoration is typical of Yixing wares of the Kangxi period – see Valfre page 217 for examples. The pot is of slab construction made from a typical dense fine grained dark Yixing clay body and is formed in two parts; an exterior hexagonal body enclosing a smaller tubular vessel or liner. The larger body was intended to hold hot liquid to maintain the heat of either brewed tea or warmed wine. The body of the teapot is in excellent condition, as is the inner pot, but with losses to the inner lip of the main body. Original iron handles and tightly fitting metal cover. See Sothebys Auction January 2006 where an identical ewer dated to the late 17C or early 18C was sold. The height and diameter of the ewer is approximately 11cm. Shipping at Cost.
