Rare, handwrought Frost Studios brooch with green stone. This vintage Arts & Crafts piece was made by George W. Frost, who founded The Frost Arts and Crafts Workshop in Dayton, OH, USA circa 1906. Probably brass, the brooch measures 2 3/8 x 1 7/16 inches. It features a geometric hand hammered pierced design, in the center of which is a 9/16 x 3/4 oval cabochon green stone, likely chrysophrase or jade. The design resembles a stylized shield, butterfly or bird, and has curvature for dimensionality. It has nice age patina with normal surface wear, some darkening and a little verdigris near the bezel. Nothing objectionable. Signed on the reverse with the partially worn Frost hallmark (FROST in a triangle).
The piece is in very good condition, and is a great example of American Arts & Crafts jewelry. Frost jewelry with stones and cutout designs are particularly difficult to come by (most of his work features acid etched designs).
Other fine examples of Frost jewelry are pictured in the Warman's Jewelry book series by Christie Romero or online at the fantastic Chicago Silver website www.chicagosilver.com/frost.htm
