Very Rare William Spratling vintage Mayan plaque / dresser stand . Same design is documented on spratlingsilver.com. Plaque of 4 x 3 3/8 inch wide wood frame w/red center. The mounted sterling silver three-dimensional very detailed figural head is 1 1/2 x 1.
This design was included in the traveling 1965 U.S. Museum Exhibit, "The World of William Spratling." It has the WS script circle mark mounted on the rear. A couple of tight age splits in top of original ebony wood frame. The sterling silver face in the form of an 'Olmec', a people believed to have originated in around 1250 B.C. and disappeared around 400 B.C. A common feature with theirs and later civilizations were: they followed a 365 day year; built pyramids; cultivated corn, and all had had similar religious rituals and the same Gods of fertility, war, sky and nature.
