19th Century, finely Hand-Carved Boxwood Netsuke depicting the Kyogen Comedy Character Usofuki. According to Raymond Bushell in his Netsuke Mask book, Usofuki refers to the mask's whistling or pursed lips. Usofuki represents various roles in the Kyogen comedy plays, such as a scarecrow, a stone god, the spirit of a mosquito, and a fruit, among others. This very fine piece was hand-carved from Boxwood. It measures approximately 1.25 inches wide, and 1.75 inches tall. Netsuke is in excellent condition, as you may be able to see in the posted photos.
