This is nicely carved, Kioto School, Early 19th Century Japanese Netsuke depicting a Karako who is beating a drum while riding an elephant that sports an elegantly decorated harness and saddlecloth, and stands on a pedestal. Although it has been stained for effect, it has also developed a warm patina. The piece has both a chimney and natural himotoshi that is formed by the spaces between the legs of the pachyderm. Signed Ranseki, a follower of Rankei, in a rectangular reserve on the bottom of the pedestal. Netsuke measures 0.76 inches (20cm) wide and 1.55 inches (3.9cm) tall.
