Early 19th Century, nicely hand-carved wood Netsuke depicting a Standing Sage, wearing a belted robe with wide sleeves, who is holding a Rush (lunch) Basket with both hands. Very interesting himotoshi that starts in the back of the sage and comes out from the robe's right sleeve, at the sage's elbow. Sage is a man whose study of Buddhism, or acts in their lifetimes, were miraculous or exemplary. Netsuke is unsigned. It measures 1.02 inches (2.6cm) wide, and 2.86 inches (7.2cm) tall. It is in excellent condition for its age (more than 150 years old), as may be seen in the posted photos.
