This is finely carved 18th Century Japanese netsuke depicting Jittoku Sennin. He is a Chinese Shih Teh who appears as a boyish figure that is marked with the wrinkles of old age. He is often depicted holding a broom, such as in this case. Incredible large chimney himotoshi, common of netsuke made during the Edo period of Japan. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.64 inches (4.2cm) wide, and 2.01 inches (5.1cm) tall. Although it has some wear in the front, it is nicely preserved, with a rich two-tone patina, and in incredible condition for its age.
