This is a finely carved boxwood netsuke depicting a Kirin seated on a rounded rectangular base, with its head turned to the right showing a stern expression. It has a well-formed bumpy spine, flames licking over its hunches, and curly tail. Inlaid eyes. Its almost two centuries of existence has giving it a rich patina and a smooth surface. The reverse side of the stand sports an elegant and symmetrical seal with remnants of red ink on it. The hole in the middle of the seal serves as a chimney himotoshi for the piece. Unsigned. Netsuke measures 1.05 X 1.45 inches (2.7 X 3.5 cm) at its base, and 1.45 inches (3.5cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.
