This is a finely carved boxwood netsuke depicting a Daruma seated cross-legged and wrapped in his cloak during the nine years of ascetic religious contemplation. He is holding a hossu. Well patinated, with a chimney himotoshi, common of netsuke made during this time period. Unsigned, but it is inscribed with the words gHino Yojin, which literally translates to: "Be cautions with fire". During the Edo period, firefighters used to walk around villages telling folks to be cautions with starting fires, specially during the dry winter season. Netsuke measures 1.90 inches (4.8 cm) wide, and 1.66 inches (4.2cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.
