Early 19th Century, excellently hand-carved Ebony (Kokutan Bokken) Netsuke depicting a Roaring Shishi that is turning its head to its right in a defiant manner. The mythical beast is resting its hind legs and extended front legs on a stand, that sports a large chimney himotoshi, common of netsuke made during the Edo period of Japan. Excellent form, great expression. Unsigned. Netsuke base measures 0.78 X 1.28 inches ( 2.0 X 3.2 cm). Netsuke is 1.56 tall. Although there are some old scratches to the base, it is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos.
