19th century finely hand-carved Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting Daruma who is awaking from his meditation; yawning with his mouth wide open, and his arms stretched out in front of him. Very real and almost painful expression in this miniature carving. The extended arms form a natural himotoshi.
This is an excellent rendering of this subject that sports double inlaid eyes with bone or other natural material detail and dark horn. His tongue has the remnants of red paint. His white teeth are also made from bone or other natural material. Unsigned.
Netsuke measures 1.20 inches (3.0cm) wide, 2.12 inches (5.4cm) long (at his stretched right leg), and 1.54 inches (3.9cm) tall. It is in excellent preserved condition, as may be seen in the posted photos
