19th Century, nicely hand-carved Boxwood netsuke depicting a Sake Cup with a finely engraved, in high relief, image of a seated Shojo, the sake cup's favorite companion, brushing aside her hair with one hand, and holding a fan with the other hand. The cup is decorated with with low relief stylized carvings of stars of clouds. The sake cup has developed a rich patina. It is signed Masakazu on the inside of the cup's base, right between the cord holes or himotoshi.
