A fine pair of antique Chinese kesi (kossu is Japanese term) tapestries of large size with gold and silver threads on silk. Theme is the woman warrior Mulan now made famous by Disney. It shows her receiving the sword from heaven and then fully outfitted for battle. In Chinese myths, supernatural qualities are attributed especially to the sword. War like themes are often woven into kesi tapestries, but this is the first one I've seen of Mulan. Figures in Kesi are often somewhat stiff, but she is quite graceful in this one. I'd say about 100 years old.
Approx 42" long x 10.8" wide each. Some color fading on one side. Physical condition good, no tears or frays, few very small stains on the left hand tapestry near the center (the wavy line at the top of this one is part of the design, not a stain).
Kesi is one of the most demanding forms of weaving, the design is identical in mirror image from either the front or back. The threads follow the pattern exactly to and fro front to back. In the Chinese terminology, there is a 3-d carved effect. Effect is quite noticeable in her armor in the detail pictures. This pair came out of an old missionary estate. Due to the time they have been in frames, one side is slightly faded whereas the color on the other side is still fresh.
A remarkable pair of kesi tapestries with a wonderful theme! old and in good condition. This is a rare example.
