扬洲套料鼻烟壶 清中期. An Daoguang period Yangzhou pink overlay snuff bottle with unusual detail and subject matter. The pink glass overlaid on white was finely carved to show 2 boys at a game and 2 birds perhaps in a mating dance. Bats frame the composition. The pink was carved thicker at the top of the bottle, progressively thinner to the bottom to yield a transition from dark to lighter hue. A tour de force for Yangzhou carving. Carnelian top, also carved. About 1850.
4.75" high ad 1" diameter. Fine condition with no flakes chips or repairs.
Notes: The old Chinese snuff bottle craftsmen used lapidary (jewellry) techniques to carve glass, jade and stones. For overlay glass, the colored overlay is carved away to reveal the color below. See an example of an uncarved blank in my listing #439434.
