清戴揁山水扇 19世纪. A fine Chinese landscape fan painting with genre figures. Calligraphy, signature and 2 seals of the artist Dai Zhen and dated 1885, with a dedication to a friend with given name of Xuan Qing (no surname written). Painting has been matted and framed in a simple gold frame. Fine detail and composition, and the figures are well done. See close-ups which are magnified over the original.
Painting area 20" by 7". Fan paper has a soft silver finish on the surface which can be seen in one of the close-ups. Very good condition with no tears or stains.
Note: The inscription is a dedication to Xuan Qing who either retired or departed; with a reference to the "peach stream garden" which is a euphemism for a literary ideal world. There are a number of late Qing dynasty era literary figures with the given name of Xuan Qing. Dai was likely a member of the extended imperial family many of whom abandoned the Manchu art of war and became artists. Signature includes age of the artist at 67 years old.
