A porcelain ice water pitcher, that was made in France, but decorated in New York, probably by Houghwout & Co. Pottery in Greenpoint. The pitcher is approx. 9 inches tall. It has a large guard over the spout. On either side are two raised scroll framed cartouches. Over the one that is a hand painted sailing scene is the word, “Mathews.” The other hand painted scene looks like a Western river scene. There are no makers marks on the pitcher. Condition: No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. There is significant gilding wear on the handle, the guard and the scrolls. The mold lines are visible on the front and the back. There are some pin hole firing flaws. The paintings are in very good condition. The painting of the sail boats is extremely well painted. The perspective is good and the shadows of the boat oan the rocks realistic. The Western scene is more of a sketch in enamels. These dedication pitchers were special orders. The two scenes depicted were probably of some significance to the Mathews for whom this pitcher was ordered. |
