Assorted Medieval Gold Coins, c.700-1100AD
This style of gold coinage from Sri Lanka (GWB 1-20) began with the Manavamona Dynasty, c.700, lasting with minor variation until that Dynasty ended with the Chola conquest in the early 11th century. Known as Kahavanu gold, Types I, II and III, these and a few other later period styles are illustrated in "Medieval Gold Coins of Sri Lanka, (700-1100AD)", 2002, by O. M. R. Sirisena (ISBN:955-8133-04-3), a most helpful guide to their identification. The earlier Type I and II coins are generally of higher artistic quality and of more intrinsic value due to a greater gold content than those coins of Type III which are noted for a slight degradation of imagery over the three centuries during which they were produced and a reduction in gold content to 9k. This group consists of one 10-11mm Type II fractional, fifteen 19-21mm Type III, and four 10-11mm Type III fractional. I found this to be a fascinating coin group, and believe a viewer will too (3 of the photos offer a partial explanation of symbology as taken from Sirisena reference). Select or ask any question by first referring either to the Trocadero "Item #" or to the "Stock #" at the top of this page, AND to the inventory number of the item you're inquiring about as shown just below the coin of interest followed by its Type in brackets. And, if you would like to view a large number of our various listings, and at the same time limit your browsing, try our ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’ by simply spelling out the word TWELVE in the search box. That will quickly bring up all of our listings that have up to twelve different items on a page, each individually priced! And if you want to further refine the search process, add one or two additional modifiers at the same time such as ‘Indian, Precolumbian, Stone, Pot, Gold, Jewelry, etc.’ Note that any of the items that have been sold in this group will be so-marked.
