Large Colima Gourd Olla With Projecting Heads
Starting on March 1, 2014 and on the first day of each following month through the last day of December, 2014, this bowl will be reduced an additional $3,000 from its listed price of $35,000 (that is: $32K on 3/1; $29K on 4/1; $26K on 5/1; $23K on 6/1; $20K on 7/1; $17K on 8/1; $14K on 9/1; $11K on 10/1; $8K on 11/1; and $5K on 12/1). From the estate of the late Lynn Langdon, he acquired this spectacular burnished red-ware olla (LLL483) in the mid-20th century in West Mexico. The olla, about 15” across from nose-tip to nose-tip, is attributed to the Colima horizon dating into the Pre-Classic period c.300BC-300AD. Protruding equidistantly apart along the shoulder break are eight powerfully expressed, almost identical helmeted heads. Due to apparent heavy surface restoration and repainting, and evidence of some repair through X-ray analysis, Bob Dodge of Artemis Galleries (the local representative for the Kotalla TL Laboratory in Germany) was contracted to collect samples from this olla to have Kotalla determine its age through the TL (thermoluminescence) age-dating process. Kotalla’s analysis, fully supported by Dodge, came back with a date of 2000 years old, plus or minus the standard 20% error. Langdon considered this amazing bowl a focal point of his extensive collection and had it on loan to a local college museum in Idaho for a number of years. The olla comes with a display card, a biographical sketch about Langdon, a map of Mexico highlighting the Colima area, Kotalla’s complete thermoluminescence report signed by both he and Dodge, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity.
