NOTE: Although these photos indicate the illustrated whorls have sold, we have more of the same types at the same prices, so if interested, just state which styles are of interest and photos will be sent. This group of twelve individual Pre-Columbian spindle whorls [XKJ (BIRD, FISH, GEOMETRIC, JAGUAR, MONKEY, OWL, PACHOTA, PELICAN, POSSUM, PREENING BIRD, REPTILE, and SPECIAL)], each with a different image type, is uniquely attributed to the Manteno horizon of Ecuador dating c.800-1500AD. From a major collection that has been graded into five condition categories with ‘A’ being the best preserved, and ‘E’ being the most poorly preserved, this group is made up of mostly ‘A’ and a couple of ‘B’ grades. Prices of the ‘A’ grades range from $25 to $75 depending upon the rarity of the subject matter (prices decrease for the lower grades). Each of the whorls was individually hand carved during the indicated time period, packed with what appears to be powdered clay, and then fired. The types represented in this illustrated group do not cover the complete range that have been found, but do illustrate most of them. As each whorl was hand carved by a Pre-Columbian artisan, there is never an exact duplicate, although some of the same type may appear almost identical. Each photo is noted with first the Inventory number of the item in brackets, followed by a brief description of the image type, then the maximum millimeter width of the illustrated whorl, and finally its price. Select or ask any question by referring first to the Trocadero Number on this page, and then the Inventory Number shown on the given photograph. Any that have been sold will be so-marked on the appropriate photo. A purchase comes with a small display card, a map of Ecuador highlighting the area in which the Manteno culture lived, and a certificate guaranteeing authenticity. Note that we have additional whorls of most of the types shown, but availability will determine what grades can be supplied. NOTE: if you enjoy this ‘TWELVE different items on a single page format’, and would like to see all the different categories that we currently list in our catalog, spell out the word TWELVE in the search box and it will bring them all up.
