Painting 1st Grand National Aintree Steeplechase Winner
This is an ink and watercolored drawing of the famous thoroughbred, Lottery, the first horse to win the Aintree Grand National in 1839, and his jockey, Jem Mason, wearing the colors of owner John Elmore. Lottery, a gelding, was considered the most famous steeplechaser of his day in England. The painting is signed with a monogram, F. G., and dated April 22, 1844. It is in an antique pine frame with mahogany veneer that measures around 8 X 11 inches. The reason for the odd shaped mat is that the painted had been torn at the margins and this was the only way to mat it out. A nice piece of steeplechase/sporting history.
