| This is an unusual oil on canvas of a Golden Retriever hunting in the field. Unusual because it is very rare to find 19th century paintings of this breed and also rare to find paintings of this breed actually hunting. It bears the signature of Robert Cleminson and it certainly looks like one of his paintings, but the signature does not look original to the painting. The canvas was restored and relined at some point and I wonder if the original signature was lost when the canvas may have been trimmed and reattached to the stretcher. Someone may have decided to add his signature back onto the painting after the restoration. That's the only thing I can come up with because this definitely looks like a Cleminson dog! Robert Cleminson (op. 1865-1903) was an English painter who specialized in gun dogs and hunting scenes. I have sold several paintings by him over the years and I have one listed now that is in need of restoration, or at least a good cleaning! This canvas is housed in a very old walnut over pine frame that measures 14.5 X 12.5 inches. Original price was $850. | ||
