| We have a very large oil painting of a fox hunt, taking place in a wooded landscape. Painted on a lacquered oval papier-mache plaque that measures 25 X 19 inches, it comes from England and dates to circa early to mid-1800s. On the bottom side there is an impressed name of Clay/London, which stands for Henry Clay (d. 1812), who described himself on his trade card as 'Japanner in ordinary to his Majesty and to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales'. Japanning refers to the process of applying layer upon layer of lacquer to achieve the high-sheen look. His studio was purchased in 1860 by the famous firm of Jennens & Bettridge, well known for producing high quality papier mache wares, so this piece pre-dates 1860. This was probably either a tray or served as a table-top; we have displayed it on a large easel but it could be framed and hung on the wall, or fashioned back into a tray or table. Condition is good with all-over heavy crazing of the lacquered surface. Much of the gilt on the edge has worn away with use, and there are chips of missing paint here and there, but otherwise it is in sturdy condition and it looks stunning. Original price was $2,500. | ||
