| Printing wood block used for a prayer flag, representing three lamas, probably three Bodhisattvas as they all have the gesture of argument ("Vitarka Mudra"). In this gesture the tips of thumb and index fingers touch each other, forming a circle, whereas all other fingers are extended upwards. These blocks are still used to print prayer flags (also called "lungta", "lung" means wind, "ta" means horse), so lunta means "who is riding the wind". The printing process is as follows: the block is covered with mineral ink, then the cloth to be printed is placed on to the carved surface, and pressure is applied to the back of the cloth. This block was collected from the Tamang community of Langtang in Nepal. The carving is rough and not as precise as in very old Tibetan wood blocks. The piece is in very good condition. Age can be around 30 to 50 years. Total dimensions of the wood block are 24 inches (60 cm) x 6 inches (16cm). Each carving size is about 5 X 6 inches (10 X 12 cm). | ||
