| A very old printing wood block used to print tibetan prayer flag, this one figures the famous deity Garuda. Garuda is a half-man and a half-bird and is also shown under several forms. Garuda is the vehicle of Vishnu. In this carving, one can identify an eagle face holding a snake in its mouth, open wings and legs with claws. The body is covered with holy writing. Note that carving of letters is somewhat tricky as they should be carved upside down !!! Very precise carving. These blocks are still used to print prayer flags (also called "lungta", "lung" means wind, "ta" means horse). Printing is done as follows: the block is covered with mineral ink, then the piece of cloth to be printed is placed on to the carved surface and pressure is applied to the back of the cloth. This block has been personally collected from the Tibetan community of Dolpo. In fact, the block was broken into two parts and thus was useless. It has then been nicely fixed and restored. Notice the difference in patina because the two parts have been differently exposed to dust and light for probably a very long period of time. Except for the break, the piece is in very good condition. Age is probably over 50 years. Dimensions are 8 inches (20 cm) x 5 1/4 inches (13cm). | ||
