Very interesting and fine Nuo performance old mask probably from the Tujia people of Guizhou. Although primarily animistic in nature, Nuo rituals, have incorporated Taoist and Buddhist deities into their ceremonies. This mask represents the character of He Shang, a Buddhist monk who attempts to convert the locals to Chinese Buddhism. He is often figured as a smiling friendly face. Although this mask has been repainted with a black and dark red polychromia it shows obvious signs of long use and great age likely around 150 y old, very good carving work and very good condition. Very good condition. Sizes are , height : 9 1/2 inches (24cm and wide: 6 inches (16cm) . The mask is nicely mounted on an iron stand.
