Himalayan mask, Mompa people, India

A typical mompa mask showing a ridged faced probably a Brokpa the local name for Yak shepherd. Mopa people are located in Aranuchal praddesh (East of India). The mask show a black patina made with a color mixture according to the usual way of making Mompa Mask. Note the presence of small thin dusty encrusted carved lines, and at the bottom of each ear, probably a thin piece of precious wood is fixed to figure ear rings. The eyes are pierced through with very regular round shape, the mouth is half open down side giving a feeling of surprise or sadness. The noose is sharp and regular. The mask is carved in semi hard wood obvious signs of use circa 1960, likely first part of the 20Th. Height 23 cm , wide 21 cm. The mask is presented on an iron stand.
